The Verla groundwood and board mill, 25 km north of Kuusankoski, is a unique landmark in the early history of Finland's forest industry. The mill complex, which was in operation form 1872 to 1964, was opened to the public in 1972. Verla is on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the best remaining example of a type of mill very common in northern Europe and North America from the second half of the 19th century. Conducted tours in Finnish begin on the hour (17.00 hrs last one), tours in English 30 minutes past the full hour (17.30 hrs).
